Preconception Counseling Q & A

What is preconception counseling?

Preconception counseling involves working with your chosen obstetrician to maximize your health and wellness prior to getting pregnant. Preparation can improve your chances of conceiving a child, having a healthy pregnancy, and welcoming a healthy child into the world.

There’s also a mental health component of preconception planning. Although often overlooked, your emotional health can have a great deal of impact on how your pregnancy progresses, as well as how you and your partner manage those first trying months as new parents.

What happens at a preconception counseling appointment?

This visit focuses primarily on gathering information. You’ll share the full details of your personal and family health history. That includes a list of all medications and supplements you’re currently taking. In terms of your family health history, be sure to mention any medical conditions that close family members live with, as well as any history of pregnancy complications, birth defects, or genetic conditions.

You’ll also discuss your home and work environments to check for potential hazards. Exposure to toxic chemicals, X-rays, lead, and even cat feces can pose a risk to a healthy pregnancy. Reducing or eliminating those potential hazards can help keep you and your baby safe.

Depending on where you are in the planning process, you may have a pelvic exam and lab tests to check your overall health. It’s helpful to bring in a copy of your immunization records as well as an overview of your recent menstrual cycles.

What can I do to prepare for a healthy pregnancy?

There are many steps you can take to support a healthy pregnancy, and getting an early start is a great approach. One important consideration is reaching and sustaining a healthy weight prior to getting pregnant.

Making positive changes to your diet and exercise routines is also a great way to prepare for pregnancy. A growing body of research supports the notion that exercise can help you avoid pregnancy complications and have an easier labor and delivery experience, as well as helping you bounce back after giving birth.

Be sure to discuss genetic testing with your obstetrician during your preconception counseling appointment. That’s especially important if you’re over the age of 40 or have a family history of genetic disorders.

When it comes to preparing for a new baby, planning ahead is a great way to have a healthy pregnancy. Schedule your preconception counseling appointment with North Atlanta Women’s Care today to get started.
